In 1968, a commission set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson to investigate the causes of a series of race riots concluded that the media was, in part, to blame. The presidential panel urged media organizations to do a better job of covering the black community – and to be more aggressive in hiring and promoting black journalists. Today, nearly four decades after that report was issued, that continues to be a challenge for broadcast and print news organizations. The Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies is a 501 (c) 3 organization that works to improve the number of blacks working in the journalism profession and enhance the coverage of issues of importance to people of African descent.
